DOT Mobile Phone Tampering: Must Register IMEI Number of Mobile Phones in India

A big step has been taken by the government of India to prevent the misuse of mobile phones in various security issues and the ability to track down lost mobile phones. In 2017, the DOT (Department of Telecommunication) notified
rules to prevent tampering with IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) numbers of phones. Now the same rule has been amended by the government for mobile phone manufacturers and importers.

i) The Indian manufacturers shall register the IMEI numbers of every mobile phone with the  Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction portal  (https://icdr.ceir.gov.in ) in the Department of Telecommunications prior to the first sale of the mobile phone. It shall come into force with effect from Jan 01st, 2023.

ii) Importer shall register IMEI numbers of every phone imported in India for sale, testing, R&D, and any other purposes phone with the Indian Counterfeited Device
Restriction portal (https://icdr.ceir.gov.in ) in the Department of Telecommunications prior to the import of import. It shall come into force with effect from 26th Sep 2022.
