In a significant move towards technological uniformity and consumer convenience, Saudi Arabia has announced the standardization of charging ports to USB-C.
The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) spearheaded this initiative to reduce electronic waste and simplify charging solutions for consumers. The mandate for USB-C ports is expected to take effect in the coming months, impacting manufacturers and importers of electronic goods.
Beginning January 1, 2025, USB-C charging ports will be mandatory for all mobile phones and a variety of electronic devices, including headphones, keyboards, speakers, routers, and others.
The regulations will be enforced in two steps:
First phase – Starting from January 1, 2025, this regulation will be applicable to mobile phones and other electronic devices.
Second phase– Starting from April 1, 2026): this regulation will be applicable to laptops and portable PCs.
