Navigating India’s Automotive Industry Standards (AIS)

In India, the Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) play a pivotal role in ensuring safety, quality, and innovation.

Let’s dive into what makes AIS a driving force:

1. Foundation and Framework:
   • AIS is short for “Automotive Industry Standards.” These technical specifications are based on the Central Motor Vehicles Regulations, 1989 (CMVR).
   • All safety norms prescribed under CMVR 1989 draw inspiration from UN/European Regulations, which are internationally accepted¹.

2. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRT&H):
   • The regulatory framework for automotive and vehicle standards in India falls under the purview of MoRT&H.
   • Driving licenses, vehicle registration, traffic control, and maintenance—all governed by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (MVA) and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 (CMVR)¹.

3. Technical Standing Committee (CMVR-TSC):
   • The CMVR-TSC advises MoRT&H on technical aspects related to CMVR.

4. Automobile Industry Standards Committee (AISC):

5. AIS Publications:
   • The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) publishes AIS on behalf of AISC.
   • These standards cover everything from emissions to crash safety, ensuring vehicles meet stringent requirements.

6. Upcoming AIS-004 (Part 3):
   • As the European Union revises regulations to Rev.3, AISC is formulating a consolidated standard.
   • AIS-004 (Part 3) aligns with ECE R 10 Rev.3, emphasizing radiated emissions and immunity¹.
