The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially designated the 6 Gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band for unlicensed Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) operations in Pakistan.
This decision makes Pakistan the 10th nation in the Asia-Pacific region to adopt the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi use.
The announcement was made during the event titled “Unlocking Pakistan’s Connectivity: Enablement of Next-Gen Wi-Fi in 6 GHz Band,” marking a significant step towards enhancing the country’s connectivity infrastructure.
At present, Wi-Fi in Pakistan operates on two primary frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. These bands offer bandwidths of 100 MHz and 150 MHz, respectively.
However, these Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands are shared with numerous other technologies. For instance, devices such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth gadgets, and cordless phones also utilize these frequencies, which can lead to significant congestion and interference.
Wi-Fi 6E will resolve issues related to congestion and latency.
Devices that were previously certified without support for the 6 GHz band now have an opportunity to enhance their capabilities. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is now accepting applications for certificate revisions to incorporate Wi-Fi 6E support, covering the frequency range of 5925 MHz to 6425 MHz.
