Nigeria NCC: Major changes introduced in the Type approval

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced the Nigeria Communications (Type Approval) Regulations, 2024, along with the Type Approval Business Rules released in August 2024. These updates represent a significant evolution in Nigeria’s regulatory framework for telecommunications equipment, aiming to enhance compliance, safety, and quality standards for all devices used within the nation’s communication networks.

Key changes are as follows:

  1. Devices featuring digital displays or remote login functionality can utilize e-labels; however, they are still required to have a physical label on the packaging.
  2. Submitted device samples will not be returned.
  3. A significant change to the regulation is the allowance for provisional approval of research prototypes or devices still in development. This change encourages innovation by enabling developers to test and improve their products in real-world settings prior to full certification.
