BIS has announced the updated guidelines regarding the implementation of IS 302 (Part 1):2024 / IEC 60335-1:2020, particularly concerning Adapters for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances.
The key changes in IS 302 (Part 1):2024 compared to the 2008 version:
Alignment with International Standards: The 2024 revision aligns more closely with IEC 60335-1:2020, incorporating updated international safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, ensuring better compliance with global standards.
Stricter Safety Tests: The revised standard introduces additional mandatory tests, including:
- Earth continuity test
- Electric strength test
- Functional test
- Protection against electric shock
- Leakage current and electric strength at operating temperature.
Enhanced Leakage Current Requirements: The leakage current values have been made more stringent compared to the previous version, reflecting a stronger emphasis on consumer safety.
New Testing Procedures: Additional tests for abnormal operation and mechanical strength have been added, as well as aging tests for elastomeric parts, which were not part of the earlier standard.
Transition Period: The existing IS 302-1:2008 will run concurrently with the new standard until February 23, 2025, after which the older version will be withdrawn. This allows manufacturers time to adapt their products and processes to meet the new requirements.
These changes signify a robust enhancement in safety measures for household electrical appliances, aiming to protect consumers and improve product reliability in the market.
