On November 20, 2024, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a Second Report and Order implementing regulations to support the transition from Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) technology to Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology for the Intelligent Transportation System.
In 2020, the FCC reduced the spectrum allocated for ITS by 45MHz, and efforts by transportation organizations to challenge this decision were unsuccessful. The newly established rules now offer definitive guidance on utilizing the remaining 30MHz of the 5.9 GHz band for C-V2X in-vehicle and roadside units across the U.S.
The Order imposes a two-year timeframe for the discontinuation of DSRC operations in the 5.9 GHz band, beginning from its publication date in the Federal Register. Additionally, any new licenses granted after the final rules are implemented will authorize only C-V2X operations, with DSRC operations excluded.
