Israel Sets Final Deadline for 2G and 3G Network Shutdown

Israel’s Ministry of Communications has confirmed that the gradual phase-out of 2G and 3G networks, initiated in 2021, will conclude by the end of 2025. This move is part of a national initiative to modernize telecom infrastructure and reallocate valuable spectrum to 4G and 5G services.

Why the Transition?

The decision aligns with global trends aimed at boosting network efficiency, speed, and capacity. By retiring outdated systems, Israel is freeing up radio frequencies for the expansion of advanced technologies that can meet the rising demand for high-speed mobile connectivity and data-heavy applications.

From January 2026, only devices and systems that support 4G or 5G with VoLTE capabilities—including machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions—will be able to operate on national networks.

Who Will Be Affected?

Users of legacy mobile phones without 4G or 5G support.

Businesses or services relying on older M2M communication systems.

Telecom operators and service providers tasked with assisting customers in migrating to newer technologies.

Key Implications

The shutdown presents a significant regulatory milestone with widespread impact across multiple sectors. Immediate technological upgrades will be required to avoid service disruptions, and failure to adapt could pose risks to critical connectivity and security.
