MEITY Seeks Industry Comments on Migration to IS 62368 for Existing BIS Registrations

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), Government of India, has initiated a significant step in the evolution of product safety standards in India. Associations and industry stakeholders have been asked to submit their comments and views on the migration of existing BIS registrations from the older IS 13252 (Part 1) and IS 616 standards to the newer and more comprehensive IS 62368.

🔍 Background

India’s Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), currently mandates safety compliance under IS 13252 (Part 1) and IS 616 for a wide range of Information Technology Equipment (ITE), Audio-Video (AV) devices, and household electronics.

However, both IS 13252 (aligned with IEC 60950-1) and IS 616 (aligned with IEC 60065) are now considered obsolete at the international level, having been replaced by IEC 62368-1 — a hazard-based safety engineering standard that merges the older IT and AV safety frameworks into a single unified standard.

India’s adoption of IS 62368 is already in motion. MEITY is now considering a 3-year transition plan for the implementation of IS 62368-1 (4th Edition), giving manufacturers time to align their designs, testing, and certifications with the new requirements.

This transition is expected to significantly improve product safety and better harmonize Indian requirements with global best practices.

🧭 What This Means

This migration would affect all manufacturers and certificate holders who currently maintain valid BIS registrations under IS 13252 and IS 616. Once the migration plan is finalised, these products will be required to demonstrate compliance with IS 62368 to continue selling in the Indian market.

This initiative is part of India’s larger effort to align with international safety best practices while enhancing consumer protection and product integrity.
