The Sultanate of Oman has officially phased out its entire 3G network, marking a pivotal step in its digital infrastructure journey. This move, part of the broader Oman Vision 2040, reinforces the nation’s commitment to modernising its telecommunications landscape and boosting efficiency
Network Evolution:
In total, over 5,600 3G stations were decommissioned. As a result, Oman now boasts 99% national coverage for 4G and 90% for 5G services. The spectrum released from the 3G shutdown is being redirected to support more advanced mobile technologies, including Internet of Things (IoT) applications and next-gen wireless services.
Efficiency and Sustainability:
This transition is also expected to reduce energy consumption by more than two million kilowatt-hours annually, contributing to national sustainability goals and operational efficiency for telecom providers.
With this bold move, Oman becomes one of the few countries worldwide to fully retire its 3G network, reinforcing its position as a leader in digital connectivity and infrastructure modernization.
