The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released Amendment No. 1 to IS 16270:2023 –Secondary cells and batteries for solar photovoltaic applications (General requirements and methods of test).
The amendment must be implemented by 08 December 2025.
Key Changes Introduced In the Indian Standard:
- Scope expanded – now applicable to all types of secondary cells and batteries used in solar PV off-grid applications.
- Typographical corrections in clauses 8.4.3.2 (para 2 & 3)
- For lithium batteries – discharge must now be carried out at 0.2 It current.
- Tests in Table 6 made applicable for cells as per Indian standard.
Implementation Guidelines:
- Existing licensees must comply by 08 Dec 2025 through complete test report of all lead models and provide an undertaking for all models under licence.
- New applications (till 08 Dec 2025) can be processed with or without the amendment (with declaration). Post 08 Dec 2025, licences will only be granted with compliance.
- For change in scope, the same provisions apply; non-amended processing allowed only up to 08 Dec 2025 or until implementation.
This amendment is an important step to enhance safety, performance, and standardization in solar PV battery applications.
