BIS has established revised Indian Standard for UPS/INVERTORS i.e. IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 /IEC 62040-1:2017 against the standard IS 16242 (Part 1): 2014/IEC 62040-1: 2008.
This revision has covered the following changes:
- IS 16242 (Part 1):2025/IEC 62040-1: 2017 uses IEC 62477-1:2012 as a reference document (RD).
- Definition of movable UPS has been added.
- Modified the clause on flammability of enclosure materials.
- Additional working voltages added in creepage distance test.
- Additional requirements in steady force test.
- Additional requirements in handles and manual control securement test.
- Additional requirements in touch current measurement test.
- Modified requirements in capacitor discharge test for pluggable type B UPS and additional requirement for permanently connected UPS.
- Additional requirements in temperature rise test.
- Modified requirements in input current test.
- Additional clauses: short time withstand current, unsynchronized load transfer test, loss of coolant test, dry heat test, damp heat test, hydrostatic pressure test.
The date of implementation of IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 /IEC 62040-1:2017 is 19 November 2025.
With the view of these significant changes BIS has released the guidelines for the implementation of the revised Indian Standard IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 /IEC 62040-1:2017, which as follows:
- All existing licensees must apply for the complete test reports as per the revised IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 /IEC 62040-1:2017 for all the lead models covered in the scope of the licence.
- The applicants are also required to submit an undertaking stating the models/series complying to IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 /IEC 62040-1:2017.
- The cases where sample has been submitted in the Laboratory or Test Report have been issued by the Laboratory against old standard i.e. IS 16242 (Part 1): 2014/IEC 62040-1: 2008, the applicants will be required to submit the declaration that they will implement the revised standard by the last date of implementation of IS 16242 (Part 1): 2025/IEC 62040-1:2017.
- After the last date of implementation of the revised standard i.e. 19 November 2025, licence/models not complying to revised IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 /IEC 62040-1:2017 will be cancelled/deleted from the scope of the licence.
