LPG Gas Stove Notification (Ministry of Power & Bureau of Energy Efficiency)

The Government of India, through the Ministry of Power and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), has introduced new rules for domestic LPG stoves to make cooking more energy-efficient and consumer-friendly.

From 1st January 2026, all LPG stoves sold in India—whether made locally or imported—must carry a star label (1 to 5 stars) that shows how energy-efficient the stove is. These standards are based on Indian Standard IS 4246:2002 and ensure that every product meets clear performance benchmarks.

This initiative aims to help households save energy, reduce fuel consumption, and make it easier for consumers to choose more efficient appliances, while also supporting India’s larger energy conservation goals.

Key Points:

1. Scope & Applicability
  • Applies to all domestic LPG stoves (manufactured, imported, or sold in India).
  • Must comply with Indian Standard IS 4246:2002.
  • Only for LPG use (not for other gases).

2. Definitions
  • Domestic Gas Stove: Appliance with metallic body (with/without glass top), with single/multiple burners, intended for LPG at 30 gf/cm² inlet pressure.
  • Label: Printed/graphic information displayed on the stove.
  • Thermal Efficiency: Determined as per clause 26 of IS 4246:2002.
  • 3. Star Rating System (Energy Efficiency)
  • Stoves will carry star labels (1–5 stars) based on thermal efficiency.
  • Validity of current rating plan: 1 Jan 2026 – 31 Dec 2028.

3. Star Rating Bands (Table 3.1):
  • ⭐ 1 Star: ≥ 68% and < 70%
  • ⭐⭐ 2 Star: ≥ 70% and < 72%
  • ⭐⭐⭐ 3 Star: ≥ 72% and < 74%
  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Star: ≥ 74% and < 76%
  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Star: ≥ 76%
  • Scheme will be reviewed every two years or earlier if needed.

4. Testing & Compliance
  • Tests as per IS 4246:2002:
  • Thermal Efficiency (Clause 26)
  • Gas Consumption (Clause 17)
  • No negative tolerance allowed; products must meet minimum efficiency for each star band.

5. Eligibility for Participation
  • Manufacturers/importers/traders must register with BEE through the Standards & Labeling portal.
  • Must hold a valid BIS license for LPG stoves.
  • Test reports must be from NABL, ILAC, APAC, or CSIR accredited labs.

6. Energy Efficiency Criteria
  • Each burner of the stove must meet star-level efficiency.
  • For labeling, the lowest efficiency burner of the stove will be considered.

7. Test Reports
  • Required for 3 samples per model.
  • Reports must include:
  • Thermal efficiency of each burner.
  • Gas consumption (kg) for all three samples.

8. Annexure A – Reporting Format
  • Specifies details to be included in test reports (manufacturer details, lab details, burner details, efficiency results, gas consumption, etc.).

9. Additional Notification S.O. 3620(E)
  • Officially specifies that domestic gas stoves intended for LPG at 30 gf/cm² inlet pressure are covered under the Energy Conservation Act.
