The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has officially notified the migration to IS/IEC 62368 (Part 1): 2023, marking a major step in harmonising India’s safety standards for electronic and IT equipment.
This transition replaces the long-standing IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 and IS 616: 2017 standards under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 (CRO).
Key Highlights of the Order
✅ IS/IEC 62368-1: 2023 now replaces IS 13252 and IS 616 for applicable Electronic and IT (E&IT) products.
🆕 Extended Reality (XR) Products — including Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) devices — have been newly added under the CRO at Serial No. 65, and must comply with IS/IEC 62368-1: 2023.
🗓️ Dual-standard compliance periods have been announced:
For XR products — until 1 May 2026
For all other products — until 1 November 2028
After these dates, IS 13252 and IS 616 will be formally withdrawn.
