INMETRO Certification

For Brazil

Ensure access To Brazilian market with INMETRO Certification

Understanding INMETRO Certification

INMETRO (Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Qualidade e Tecnologia) plays a pivotal role in regulating the quality and safety of products entering the Brazilian market. This certification acts as a safeguard, ensuring that products meet rigorous national standards, thereby enhancing consumer confidence and promoting higher manufacturing standards.

By obtaining INMETRO certification, manufacturers can legally market their goods in Brazil while assuring compliance with essential safety requirements.

Regulatory Authority

INMETRO operates under the Ministry of Economy and is responsible for issuing conformity assessments and certifications for a wide range of products. It partners with accredited certification bodies and laboratories to enforce compliance with Brazilian standards.

Decree 371 for Electrical and Electronic Household Appliances

The implementation of these standards, aligned with IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60335-2-x, is broken down into three phases:

  • Phase 1: New household appliances must meet the technical standards and display the INMETRO mark. Manufacturers are also required to maintain a Customer Complaint Service to address consumer concerns. Ongoing compliance is ensured through regular reassessments of manufacturers.

  • Phase 2: All household appliances, both imported and locally manufactured, must conform to the INMETRO standard to be sold in Brazil. While previous stock could be sold for a limited time, all new products are now subject to certification.

  • Phase 3: All existing stock and new products sold in Brazil must be certified under the INMETRO mark. This ensures that no uncertified products remain in the market.

Products That Require INMETRO Certification

A broad range of products require INMETRO certification before they can be sold in Brazil, mandatory ones are:

  • Electrical and electronic household appliances
  • Medical devices
  • Circuit breakers
  • Ballasts
  • Wires and cables
