Japan Radio Type Approval

Japan has Type Approval requirements for certain types of products, including radio products and general products like textile products, plastics, toys etc…

These  key certifications associated with type approval in Japan are the PSE Mark, VCCI  and the MIC Certificate.

The PSE (Product Safety Electrical Appliance and Material) Mark is a mandatory safety certification for electrical and electronic products sold in Japan. It indicates that the product has undergone testing and meets the safety requirements specified by the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (DENAN). 

The PSE Mark demonstrates compliance with electrical and fire safety standards, protecting consumers and ensuring product safety.

The MIC Certificate, also known as the Radio Law Certificate, is required for wireless communication devices. It ensures that the devices meet the technical requirements outlined by the Radio Law in Japan. The certification covers aspects such as radio frequency interference prevention, radio wave emissions, and other technical specifications related to wireless communication.

VCCI (Voluntary Control Council for Interference by Information Technology Equipment) Certification is a self-regulatory organization in Japan that focuses on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards for information technology (IT) equipment and electronic devices. While VCCI certification is not mandatory, many manufacturers voluntarily pursue it to demonstrate compliance with EMC requirements. The VCCI mark indicates that the product has undergone testing and conforms to the guidelines set by VCCI, ensuring it meets acceptable electromagnetic emission and immunity levels.

To obtain type approval in Japan, manufacturers or importers must submit the necessary documentation, including technical specifications, test reports, and other relevant information, to the designated certification bodies or testing laboratories. These bodies evaluate the product’s compliance with applicable standards and issue the appropriate certifications, such as the PSE Mark and the MIC Certificate.
