MTC Certification and LONA Approval

For Peru

What is Peru MTC Certification and LONA Approvals

In Peru, telecom devices must comply with regulations set by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC). The MTC certification is required for all telecommunications and radio frequency devices to ensure they meet technical standards for safety and efficiency. For devices with higher power output, an additional certification known as LONA (Licencia de Operación No Automática) is mandatory. LONA approval ensures these high-power devices do not interfere with other communications and operate within the designated power limits.

Regulatory Body

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing the approval of telecommunications equipment in Peru. MTC certification is the basic requirement for all telecom devices, while LONA approval is required for devices that exceed certain power thresholds

What is MTC Certification?

MTC certification ensures that all telecommunications devices meet Peru’s national standards. Devices such as mobile phones, wireless LAN equipment, and short-range devices (SRDs) must go through this certification process to verify their compliance with the country’s telecom regulations.

What is LONA Approval?

LONA Approval is an additional requirement for devices with higher power output. Devices operating beyond specific power limits need LONA approval to ensure they do not cause interference with other telecom systems. This approval process evaluates whether the device operates safely within the assigned power and frequency bands.

Depending on the device type and frequency band, LONA approval may be required for devices with output power above either 10 mW or 200 mW.

Products That Require Approvals

Products that typically require MTC certification include:

  • Mobile phones
  • Wireless LAN devices
  • Short-range devices (SRDs)

LONA approval is required for devices that exceed a certain power output, including:
  • High-power radio transmitters
  • High-power satellite communication equipment
  • High-power wireless communication devices

MTC Certification Process

The process to obtain MTC Certification involves the following steps:

Submission of Application:

Manufacturers or importers must submit an application with technical documentation, including the product’s user manual, technical specifications, and test reports. These documents should detail how the product meets Peruvian telecom and radio frequency standards.

Testing:

Devices must be tested in an accredited laboratory to ensure they comply with MTC’s technical, safety, and radio frequency standards. These tests include evaluating the device’s power output, frequency band usage, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Review and Approval:

MTC reviews the test results and technical documentation. If the device meets all the required standards, MTC issues the certification, allowing the product to be sold and used legally in Peru.
