NRCS Approval For South Africa

For Electro-Technical Products

What is NRCS Certification

The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) approval ensures electro-technical products comply with South Africa’s compulsory standards for safety, health, and environmental protection. This regulatory framework is essential for products to be legally sold and operated within the country.

Mandatory for:
  • Electrical and electronic devices that connect to the common network (230 V/400 V AC, 50 Hz).
  • Devices that are rechargeable and other specific categories of electronic equipment.

NRCS certificates are valid for three years, and testing must be conducted at accredited laboratories.

A local representative holding an NRCS license is required.

What is NRCS Certification

Regulatory Body

NRCS is an entity under the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (the DTIC). It administers compulsory specifications (VCs) to protect public health, safety, and the environment while ensuring fair trade practices.

Products That Require NRCS Approval

NRCS approval is essential for a wide range of electro-technical products, particularly those that connect to the common network (230 V/400 V AC, 50 Hz) and rechargeable devices. These products include:

  • Electrical Appliances:
    • Household Appliances: Such as refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines, kettles, irons, stoves, and commercial catering equipment. These products must meet safety standards to ensure they are safe for consumer use.
  • Power Tools:
    • Hand-held Motor-Operated Tools: Including drills, saws, sanders, grinders, and other similar tools. These tools need to meet specific safety requirements to prevent injuries and accidents during use.
  • ICT Equipment:
    • Information and Communication Technology Devices: Such as computers, printers, copiers, and related equipment. These devices must adhere to safety standards to ensure they do not pose risks of electrical hazards or interference.
  • Audiovisual Equipment:
    • Products like televisions, radios, DVD players, and music systems need to meet safety standards to protect users from potential electrical hazards and to ensure electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Lighting Products:
    • This includes lamps, bulbs, general-purpose luminaires, and other lighting fixtures which need to comply with performance and safety standards to ensure they are efficient and safe for use.
  • Electrical Components:
    • Items like plugs, adaptors, switches, socket-outlets, and similar components are required to meet safety and performance standards to ensure they function safely and reliably within electrical systems.

Types of NRCS Certificates Issued

NRCS can issue three kind of approvals:

Letter of Authority (LOA): For products meeting the safety and energy efficiency requirements.

Regulatory Certificate of Compliance (RCC): For safety components of fixed electrical installations.

Authorisation Certificate (AC): For products not covered by standard VCs but deemed safe.
