India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has brought smartphone screen protectors under mandatory BIS registration. Through notification S.O. 5190(E), dated 21 September 2026, MeitY added the product as S. No. 66 to the Schedule of the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, better known as the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS).
The requirement takes effect from 1 April 2027, giving manufacturers and importers a defined window to test and register their products.
What Has Been Added
The new entry covers screen protectors for smartphones, mapped to the Indian Standard IS 19348:2025 (“Glass Screen Protector — Specification”).
From the effective date, all glass screen protectors for smartphones that are manufactured, imported, stored for sale, sold, or distributed in India will need to carry mandatory BIS registration and conform to IS 19348:2025.
Effective Date
The provisions of the CRO 2021 will apply to smartphone screen protectors, for conformity to IS 19348:2025, with effect from 1 April 2027. From that date, non-registered or non-conforming products cannot be legally placed on the Indian market.
Why This Matters
Adding a product to the CRS Schedule means it can only enter the Indian market once it has been tested at a BIS-recognised laboratory and the manufacturer has obtained BIS registration, allowing the product to carry the BIS Standard Mark.
For a high-volume accessory like smartphone screen protectors, this is a significant change. Manufacturers and importers who have not previously dealt with BIS CRS registration will need to factor in testing and registration timelines, which take time to complete, particularly as the deadline approaches and demand on testing laboratories increases.
What Manufacturers and Importers Should Do Now
Businesses placing smartphone glass screen protectors on the Indian market should:
- Confirm that their products fall within the scope of the new S. No. 66 entry.
- Arrange testing against IS 19348:2025 at a BIS-recognised laboratory.
- Apply for BIS registration under the Compulsory Registration Scheme.
- Complete testing and registration well ahead of the 1 April 2027 deadline to ensure uninterrupted market access.
