Brazil Type Approval
ANATEL & INMETRO
In Brazil, many electronic and telecommunications products must undergo mandatory type approval before they can be sold or operated. The approval process is managed by two key regulatory bodies: ANATEL (Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações) and INMETRO (Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Qualidade e Tecnologia). Depending on the nature of the product, you may need one or both certifications.
ANATEL Certification
ANATEL is responsible for regulating telecommunications equipment and devices that use radio frequencies, such as mobile phones, routers, Bluetooth devices, and other wireless communication products. To ensure compliance, ANATEL certification involves:
Radio Frequency Testing: This ensures that devices operate within Brazil’s allocated frequency bands and do not interfere with other communication systems.
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Devices must meet EMC standards to avoid interference with other electronic devices.
Safety and Performance: Products are tested for user safety and reliable performance under Brazilian conditions
Once the product passes these tests, ANATEL issues a homologation certificate, which allows the product to be legally sold and used in Brazil. The certification is often tied to a local representative, and ANATEL’s logo must be displayed on the product or its packaging.
INMETRO Certification
INMETRO focuses on consumer safety, energy efficiency, and overall quality for a wide range of products. This certification applies to household appliances, industrial machinery, automotive parts, medical devices, and more. Key aspects of INMETRO certification include:
Product Safety: Ensures that the product is safe for users and meets the required performance standards.
Energy Efficiency: Appliances and electrical devices are tested for energy consumption and must meet Brazil’s efficiency standards.
Labeling Requirements: INMETRO mandates specific labels to inform consumers about the safety and efficiency of products.
Certain products, especially those combining electrical components with wireless functionality, may require both ANATEL and INMETRO certifications. For example, a smart home device with Wi-Fi capabilities would need to meet both radio frequency and safety standards.
