Australia: ACMA Introduces New Class Licence for Low Interference Devices

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has officially implemented the Radiocommunications (Low Interference Potential Devices) Class Licence 2025, replacing the previous 2015 version. This updated regulation governs the operation of a wide range of short-range radio devices, including Wi-Fi equipment, radar technology, and various telemetry systems.

The Class Licence allows these devices to operate without the need for an individual licence, provided that they meet the technical and operational conditions specified in the regulation.

Supplier Compliance Obligations

The fundamental compliance responsibilities for suppliers remain unchanged. All devices must undergo verification prior to market entry, which includes:

  • A valid Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC), and
  • Proper application of the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM).

These steps ensure that equipment meets the technical and safety requirements outlined by ACMA.

Key Spectrum Updates in the 2025 Licence

The 2025 Class Licence introduces several important spectrum access changes to support emerging wireless technologies and next-generation connectivity:

Wider Wi-Fi Spectrum Access:
The licence opens new frequency ranges at 5925–6425 MHz and 5925–6585 MHz, paving the way for Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, and other indoor RLAN deployments on a broader scale.

New 5G FR2 Band Allocation:
A spectrum block in the 24.25–25.1 GHz range is now available for short-range indoor data communications and specific 5G FR2 applications.

Extended Millimeter-Wave Range:
The previous 57–66 GHz upper limit for millimeter-wave Wi-Fi has been expanded to 71 GHz, enabling higher-capacity communications and fixed point-to-point links.

Formal Radar Band Authorization:
The 76–81 GHz frequency band has been formally incorporated into the Class Licence, supporting a variety of radar and sensing technologies.

Regulatory Implications

Manufacturers and suppliers must ensure full technical compliance with the new frequency and operational parameters. Adhering to these updated requirements is essential to maintain licence-free operation under the ACMA Class Licence framework.
