Japan Updates 920 MHz Wireless Power Transfer Rules, Opening the Door to Outdoor Use

On 23 June 2026, Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) published amendments to the rules governing wireless power transfer (WPT) systems in the 920 MHz band. The amendments were published in the Official Gazette (Extra Edition No. 137) and took effect on the same day.

The update revises the technical and operational conditions for these systems and, according to industry reporting, enables their use in outdoor environments — a significant expansion of where the technology can be deployed.

What Is Wireless Power Transfer?

Wireless power transfer delivers electrical power to a device without cables, by directing radio energy from a transmitter to a receiver. In Japan, the systems covered by this update are regulated as in-premises radio stations for wireless power transmission and operate in the 920 MHz band (approximately 916.7–920.9 MHz).

The technology is well suited to powering distributed, low-power devices that are difficult or costly to wire or to service by hand.

Why This Change Matters

Broadening where 920 MHz WPT can operate creates new opportunities for powering equipment in settings where running cables or regularly replacing batteries is impractical, such as:

  • Wireless sensors across larger or open sites
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices in industrial, agricultural, and logistics environments
  • Remote monitoring and measurement equipment

This supports the continued growth of wireless sensing and IoT deployments across Japan.

What This Means for Manufacturers

Manufacturers developing or supplying 920 MHz WPT equipment for the Japanese market should review their products against the updated conditions. WPT systems must satisfy the applicable radio equipment requirements — including frequency use, power limits, and carrier-sense and transmission-control provisions — before being placed on the market.

Early review of product design and technical documentation against the revised framework will help ensure a smooth path to compliance.
