India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has extended the implementation deadline for Standalone Hard Disk Drives under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.
The extension was issued through Notification S.O. 5689(E), dated 16 October 2026, and moves the implementation date from 5 November 2026 to 1 May 2027. This provides manufacturers and importers with approximately six additional months to prepare for the applicable compliance requirements.
Background: BIS Requirements for Standalone Hard Disk Drives
India’s Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) establishes mandatory registration requirements for specified electronic and information technology products.
On 5 May 2026, MeitY issued Notification S.O. 2204(E), which replaced the product description “USB Type External Hard Disk Drives” with “Standalone Hard Disk Drives” at Serial No. 50 of the schedule to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.
The notification specified compliance with IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 and originally set the implementation date as 5 November 2026.
What Has Changed?
Under the new Notification S.O. 5689(E), MeitY has extended the implementation date of the order introduced through S.O. 2204(E).
The revised deadline is 1 May 2027, replacing the original date of 5 November 2026.
The notification changes the implementation timeline. It does not state that the product category has been removed from the CRO or that the applicable standard has changed.
What This Means for Manufacturers and Importers
The extension provides additional time for businesses to prepare for the applicable BIS compulsory registration requirements. However, the deadline extension should not be interpreted as an exemption from the order.
Manufacturers and importers should use the additional time to:
Review product scope: Confirm whether their products fall within the category of Standalone Hard Disk Drives covered by Serial No. 50 of the CRO schedule.
Assess applicable requirements: Review the requirements associated with IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 and determine the compliance activities relevant to their products.
Plan testing and registration: Allow sufficient time for any required product testing, documentation preparation and BIS registration processes.
Monitor official updates: Check for further MeitY or BIS notifications that may affect the applicable requirements or implementation timeline.
Companies should confirm the applicability of the order to their specific products rather than relying on the product name alone.
