The United Kingdom (UK) recently released a draft regulation aimed at ensuring the continued recognition of the CE marking for product safety. This move comes in response to the UK’s departure from the European Union and its impact on regulatory standards on April 15, 2024.
The draft regulation outlines provisions to maintain the recognition of CE marking for certain products placed on the UK market.
Under the proposed regulation, products carrying the CE marking and meeting EU requirements will continue to be accepted in the UK market even after the initial expiration date of 31st December 2024.
However, the draft regulation also underscores the UK’s commitment to establishing its own product safety regime in the long term. This includes the development of UK-specific conformity assessment procedures and the introduction of a new UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking.
The ongoing recognition of existing EU standards, such as the CE and reversed epsilon markings, will be extended to cover 21 product regulations, encompassing the 18 product regulations managed by the Department of Business and Trade, as initially disclosed on August 1, 2023.
