The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS) have released an important update regarding the security certification timeline for Optical Network Terminals (ONT) and Optical Line Terminals (OLT).
Voluntary Security Certification Extended Until August 31, 2025
In a revised decision, the NCCS has announced that ONT and OLT devices will continue to be covered under the Voluntary Security Certification (VSC) regime until August 31, 2025. This extension gives Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), importers, and telecom vendors more time to prepare for the transition to mandatory certification.
Key Highlights of the Update:
- Voluntary Security Certification is valid until 31st August 2025
- No administrative or evaluation fees will be charged during this voluntary phase
- Mandatory compliance under the ComSec scheme will begin from 1st September 2025
- Devices must comply with ITSAR (Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements) starting from the mandatory date
This announcement supersedes the earlier notification issued on 6th December 2024, which had set April 1st, 2025 as the original deadline.
What This Means for the Industry
This extension is a valuable opportunity for telecom stakeholders to proactively apply for voluntary certification. Engaging in the VSC process now can help streamline compliance later and avoid last-minute certification challenges.
Who Should Take Action?
OEMs manufacturing ONT and OLT devices
Importers bringing these devices into the Indian market
Service providers and telecom vendors planning deployments
Preparing early ensures your products are ready for market without disruptions once the certification becomes mandatory.
