Chile has officially passed Law 21.695, mandating the use of a universal charger for electronic devices sold within the country. This requirement applies to a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, cameras, earphones, portable speakers, and video game consoles. Smartphones must comply with the new standards by October 10, 2026, while all other electronic devices have until October 10, 2028, to meet the requirements.
Under the new law, sellers of mobile devices must offer chargers as optional purchases, allowing consumers to buy them separately instead of bundling them with the device.
Sellers are also required to clearly and promptly inform consumers whether a charging device is included with the product, along with details about the specifications of compatible chargers.
The legislation provides a two-year transition period for mobile phones and a four-year transition period for other electronic devices.
