On 23rd July 2025, the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) Regulator hosted an informative webinar highlighting recent updates and compliance expectations under the GEMS framework. The session featured key insights from Diane Hobday (NATA), Robert Caruso (GEMS Compliance), and representatives from New Zealand’s MapEL and E3 programs.
A major announcement was the introduction of new product categories under GEMS registration:
LED Products
Commercial Ice Makers
➡️ These products will require registration under GEMS starting March 2026. Manufacturers, importers, and suppliers must ensure that any covered products are tested in accredited laboratories and registered to remain compliant.
Why It Matters
The GEMS framework is designed to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance of electrical products sold in Australia. By bringing LEDs and commercial ice makers into scope, the Regulator aims to align with international best practices and reduce energy consumption across industries.
In addition to these updates, the webinar covered:
Compliance Monitoring Programs: Annual inspections and monitoring will continue.
Laboratory Accreditation: NATA accreditation remains essential for test reports to be accepted.
New Zealand Alignment: Reports for NZ E3 registration must come from accredited labs, ensuring harmonization across both markets.
What’s Next
Businesses should begin preparing now to meet the March 2026 deadline by reviewing product lines, securing accredited testing, and initiating the GEMS registration process.
