In line with its mission to foster transparency and empower consumers, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has announced the integration of QR codes into its Standards & Labeling (S&L) program.
This landmark step ensures that every energy-labeled appliance carries a unique digital identity, enhancing both consumer trust and regulatory oversight.
🔍 What the QR Code Provides
By scanning the QR code on an appliance, consumers can instantly view:
- ⭐ Star Rating
- ⚡ Energy Consumption
- 🛠️ Model Specifications
- 🏭 Manufacturer Information
This innovation equips buyers with real-time data at the point of purchase, enabling informed decisions on energy-efficient products.
🏷️ Appliances Covered in the Initial Phase
- Frost-Free Refrigerators
- Direct Cool Refrigerators
- LED Lamps
These categories have been prioritized due to their high energy consumption impact and widespread household use.
🗓️ Implementation Timeline
With the latest notification, BEE has further clarified that:
- The QR code of each registered unit of Frost-Free and Direct Cool Refrigerators must be mapped with production data.
- This functionality will come into effect on 1 October 2025.
⚙️ Why This Matters
For consumers, QR codes mean simplified access to reliable information—helping them select products that save energy and lower costs.
For manufacturers, this enhances traceability, compliance, and accountability in line with India’s sustainability roadmap.
