PTA Updates Pakistan’s Frequency Plan to Support 5G and NGMS Expansion

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has updated its National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) to support the rollout of Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS), including 5G, and to further align with international spectrum frameworks.

These updates reflect Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernise its telecommunications infrastructure and facilitate the deployment of advanced wireless technologies.

Key Regulatory Developments

5G Commercial Rollout

On 19 March 2026, PTA issued 5G licences to major network operators, marking a significant step toward commercial 5G deployment in Pakistan. As a result, devices intended for the Pakistani market must be compatible with locally designated NGMS frequency bands and meet PTA requirements to be included in the device whitelist.

RFID Frequency Allocation

Pakistan has designated the 920–925 MHz band for RFID applications. This differs from frequency allocations used in other regions, meaning equipment designed for international markets—particularly those aligned with European harmonised bands—may require adjustment to ensure compliance with local spectrum requirements.

Type Approval Requirements

PTA Type Approval remains mandatory for all radio communication equipment entering the Pakistani market. The approval process includes evaluation against key technical parameters such as:

  • Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)
  • Emission limits and spectrum masks
  • Frequency stability performance

These requirements are critical to ensuring that devices operate safely and without causing interference within the national spectrum environment.

What This Means for Industry

Manufacturers and suppliers should review their product designs and compliance strategies in light of the updated frequency plan. Alignment with local NGMS bands and spectrum allocations is essential to ensure compatibility with newly licensed services and to avoid delays in market access.

Early validation of device specifications against PTA requirements will be particularly important for cellular and short-range devices intended for deployment in Pakistan.
