The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology  (Meity) , formerly known as DeitY (Department of Electronics and Information Technology), notified Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012 (CRO) in 2012 covering 15 categories of electronics and IT products under Phase-I. 

 It aimed to regulate and mandate the registration of such products.

Since then MEITY has notified many, around more than 60 product categories under various Phases under CRO. Till date, MEITY has released Phase-I, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII which includes various electronics and IT products, LED products, Surveillance products, consumer items, speakers, battery etc.

Similarly, Ministry of New and Renewal Energy(MNRE) has notified 5 products under Solar Photovoltaics, Systems, Devices and Components Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2017.
Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has notified 3 products under Ortho Phosphoric Acid (Quality Control) Order, 2021, the Polyphosphoric Acid (Quality Control) Order, 2021 and Trimethyl Phosphite (Quality Control) Order, 2022.
Ministry of Textiles has notified one product under Cotton Bales (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

CRS is the Compulsory Registration Scheme (Scheme-II of Schedule-I) of BIS for Grant of licence to use or apply Standard Mark through registration based on self-declaration of conformity for goods and articles as per Indian Standard.
At present, there are more than 70 products notified under the scheme-II of BIS.

Any product that falls under the purview of the scheme is required to undergo mandatory in-country testing in accordance with the relevant Indian standards.

Following successful testing, the product goes through a streamlined registration process until the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) assigns a unique registration number.
