An Introduction To BIS Cerification
Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) is a statuary body established under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
BIS has been identified as the “National Standard Body of India” and is regulated under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public distribution and Government of India.
The main objective of BIS is to carry out standard developments, product certifications, training services, etc.
However, the primary and dominant objective of BIS is to formulate Indian standards for product certification.
Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, formerly known as DeitY (Department of Electronics and Information Technology), introduced a scheme called CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) in 2012
This scheme was specifically implemented for electronics and IT products. It aimed to regulate and mandate the registration of such products.
The scheme then covered first 15 electronics and IT products under the phase I. At present, there are more than 70 products notified under the scheme.
Any product that falls under the purview of the scheme is required to undergo mandatory in-country testing in accordance with the relevant Indian standards.
Following successful testing, the product goes through a streamlined registration process until the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) assigns a unique registration number.
Who can apply?
Applicant in CRS-BIS scheme is the manufacturers located inside and outside the country and engage in the manufacturing of end products notified in BIS will apply for BIS registration which conform to Indian Standards.
As per the order, no person shall manufacturer, import, store, sell or distribute the goods which do not conform to Indian standards specified in the order, but can only bear BIS standard mark with issued registration number post registration of particular model/product.
